Hi, I'm currently poking my head into DIY DCC, having been interested in it for a while but put off a lot of the ready made kit because of expense. I'm aiming to get a simple DIY setup going using the motor decoder (or multiples of) and the setup with an Arduino described here (http://amakersblog.blogspot.co.uk/2011/01/controlling-model-trains-with-arduino.html).
My background is in computing, but usually with much higher level languages (Java for instance) and while I can often work my way around, I'm relatively new to the electronics front! With that in mind, a few questions:
- The release notes for 1.05 state that the 78L05 can be swapped out for a 3.3V regulator for better DC performance - since I'll likely also be running my locos on DC for a while (until I've converted a large chunk of them to DCC) this would be useful to me, but I can't find a suitable 3.3V regulator to just drop in instead! Could you suggest one? I've found those such as the LD1117V33, but that only has a maximum input voltage rating of 15V... I found the KA78R33 which looks suitable, but costs a fortune. With the current design, do I literally just need to swap it out with the 5V one or is there anything else I need to modify?
- How do I change the default address from 3 in the asm code? I've had a quick look and can't seem to see where it's set, but my lack of understanding of assembly probably has a lot to do with this... since the DIY controller is very simple it doesn't have the ability to reprogram addresses, so I'd need to do this by programming each chip separately.
- For D1, D2 I have loads of 1N4007 lying around, would these work or does it have to be 1N4148? (I'm aware I'll need faster ones for D4-D7, but not sure about D1 and D2.)
- R15 says it should be 4R7 in the component list, but I'm sure I saw someone mention 47R instead at some point (perhaps I'm going crazy.) What's the correct value for this resistor?
- Will a 1N4750A be fine as the 27V Zener diode?
These look like great little decoders and I'm looking forward to building one - thanks!
